Epitaph Records Founder To Receive 2012 Independent Spirit Award
Posted at 4:39pm, January 26, 2012 - 27 notes
January 24, 2012 – NARM, the music business association, and digitalmusic.org, the virtual home of NARM’s digital initiatives, will hand out their prestigious Independent Spirit Award at the Music Biz 2012 convention during the Opening Session on Wednesday, May 9, at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. This year, the Award will go to Epitaph Records Founder and Bad Religion guitarist/songwriter Brett Gurewitz.
“Brett personifies the independent spirit, inspiring countless punk and indie bands through his work in Bad Religion and helping many of them reach their full potential at Epitaph Records, including The Offspring, Rancid, and NOFX,” said Jim Donio, President of NARM. “His creative entrepreneurship and commitment to thinking outside the box make him a strong player in today’s music industry. We look forward to seeing what he does next.”
Past recipients of the Independent Spirit Award include Rachelle and Joe Friedman, founders of J&R Music & Computer World in New York; Don Van Cleave, formerly the President of the Coalition of Independent Music Stores (CIMS); and Tom Silverman, Founder and CEO of Tommy Boy Entertainment.
Gurewitz co-founded seminal punk band Bad Religion in 1979, playing guitar and writing some of the band’s best-known songs, including “Infected” and “21st Century (Digital Boy).” The band’s albums How Could Hell Be Any Worse? and Suffer are widely considered to be among the best punk albums of all time, and their Atlantic Records release Stranger Than Fiction has been certified Gold. The band continues to record and release albums, with their most recent, 2010’s The Dissent of Man, reaching #35 on the Billboard 200 chart.
In 1987, Gurewitz established Epitaph Records, envisioning it as an artist-friendly label in which bands would maintain complete control over their music. The label was soon selling more than 1 million records a year, but really took off in 1994 with the release of The Offspring’s Smash, which has sold more than 11 million copies, followed by Rancid’s Out Come The Wolves which was certified platinum as well as gold records by Pennywise and NOFX. These successes established Epitaph as one of the most prominent independent rock labels in the U.S. The label has since branched out with imprint Anti-Records, created by Gurewitz in 1999 to host a more eclectic and less classically punk roster, and has released Grammy-winning albums from influential musicians such as Booker T. Jones, Mavis Staples, Solomon Burke and Tom Waits.

Epitaph Records is proud to announce the signing of Los Angeles based heavy melodic hardcore band The Ghost Inside. Formed in 2007, the band has built a following with two previous records, Fury And The Fallen Ones and Returners, as well as their riveting live performances touring with bands such as Bring Me The Horizon, Parkway Drive and The Devil Wears Prada.
The Ghost Inside’s powerful and affecting sound merges insightful and introspective lyrics with charging drums, lightning fast riffs and devastating breakdowns. The group is currently working on their yet untitled Epitaph debut with Jeremy Mckinnon (of A Day To Remember) producing.
“Signing to Epitaph is a dream come true for me,” singer Jonathan Vigil says. “The label is home to some of my all time favorite bands. Epitaph continues to be successful while maintaining the integrity of an independent label. I really look forward to the future of The Ghost Inside and Epitaph. There’s honestly no other place I’d want to call home. “

Rising punk rock band The Menzingers create a rousing sound featuring crashing power chords, rock steady drumming and anthemic sing-along choruses alongside powerfully poetic everyman lyrics. The group is set to release their Epitaph Records debut album On The Impossible Past this February 21st. Fans are invited to pre-order the album by going to The Menzingers Store.
On The Impossible Past was recorded at Atlas Studios in Chicago with longtime collaborators Matt Allison (Alkaline Trio, The Lawrence Arms) and Justin Yates. While the record retains all the raucous spirit of the band’s earlier efforts sonically, it’s a monumental step forward. “I think that ‘Gates’ is one of the most mature songs on the album,” guitarist/vocalist Tom May explains, referencing the tender rock song sung by Barnett that truly transcends genres. “I hope it surprises people because it’s not a straight-forward punk song with gang vocals or anything like that but it still definitely sounds like us.”
It’s undoubtedly been an exciting time for The Menzingers, touring with acts like Against Me! and The Gaslight Anthem as well as playing their own headlining shows to enthusiastic audiences and the band wouldn’t change it for the world. “I get a lot of personal emails that say something to the effect of ‘my girlfriend broke up with me or my dad died and I listen to your music and it makes me feel really good’ and that validates what we’re doing and the time and effort we put into the new album,” May summarizes. “When people hear the songs from On The Impossible Past, I just hope people can relate to it and it makes them feel the way we do when we sing it.”
The Menzingers will be on tour with Rise Against starting January 17th and will release a 7 inch single for the track “The Obituaries” available here.

Skip The Foreplay - “Champagne Showers” feat. Bird Wazo
Epitaph Signs Skip The Foreplay!
Posted at 11:04am, December 7, 2011 - 10 notes

New Album Out 2012
Epitaph Records is thrilled to announce the signing of Skip The Foreplay. Known for their distinct musical style, which mashes up elements of dubstep and house with pop and metal-core, the ground-breaking Montreal - based band has been electrifying audiences with their intoxicating blend of hardcore heaviness and dance floor energy since 2010. Skip The Foreplay will be releasing their anticipated full length Epitaph debut this spring.
“Aside from having one of the greatest names in history, Skip The Foreplay are simply Satan’s delivery system for music of mass destruction,” offers Epitaph founder and President Brett Gurewitz.
Skip The Foreplay made a serious impression on audiences while appearing with the likes of Hollywood Undead, Lamb Of God, NOFX, Alesana and more. The band will be joining up with rock n’ roll heavy hitter Ronnie Radke and Falling In Reverse for a tour this January and February before spending the summer on the road.
Skip The Foreplay singer Marc-André Fillion proclaims, “We’re extremely happy to now be a part of the Epitaph family. Our first record is finally done! We can’t wait to share it with you guys and will keep you posted on the release date. We’ve also just been confirmed on our first US tour with Falling In Reverse in January/February 2012. So come hang out and join the party!”
The band recently created an internet sensation with their stunning and delightfully seditious cover of the song “Champagne Showers” by the popular electro pop duo LMFAO. The new version retains all the seductive dance floor hooks of the track, while adding some serious heaviness that includes massive bass drops, breakdowns, and cerebral electronic remixes.
